Digest spoke with some daytime favorites from Bold and Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital and Young and Restless, including Cameron Mathison (Drew, GH), Heather Tom (Katie, B&B), Michael Graziadei (Daniel, Y&R), and Paul Telfer (Xander, DAYS) to find out which of their soap colleagues they think would do well calling the shots from behind the camera!

“I feel like Katey [MacMullen, Willow] would be a good director. She’s very thoughtful with all of her choices and everything she says and she’s very scene-centric; she thinks about others so much and other characters so much and really tries to understand the scene from every angle. I think she would be very good at directing other actors and understanding camera shots and all of that. Actually, I think she would be amazing!”

Tanner Novlan (Finn, B&B)
“Thorsten [Kaye, Ridge]. He’s a writer. He’s always looking to make a scene the best it can. Our directors are amazing, but he’s always open and willing to ask questions and work with directors to make the scene better. He’s very passionate about that and he can… he speaks from both perspectives of, he’s a great storyteller and he also a great actor.”

Michael Graziadei (Daniel, Y&R)
“Probably Lizzie Hendrickson [Chloe]. She’s expressed interest in it and I just see her as one of those people who is organized and has the vision to do something like that and to deal with all the actors’ egos [laughs]!”

Dan Feuerriegel (EJ, DAYS)
“Obviously, Ali Sweeney [Sami]. She has [directed at DAYS], but she hasn’t while I’ve been here. And I’d say Brandon Barash [Stefan]. I think he’d be really good. He’s very meticulous when it comes to his preparation. That kind of meticulousness would bode well for being a director.”

“Thorsten Kaye [Ridge]. I think he’d be a great director. I think he already has the sensibility for it. He understands actors very well and has really good and unique ideas when it comes to scenes and scene work. He has a clear overview of how a scene should go, how a story should go.”

Paul Telfer (Xander, DAYS)
“Stacy [Haiduk, Kristen], which might surprise a lot of people because she can be quite excitable and easily distracted, but she’s incredibly creative, has a deep, profound love for cinema, and knows how to get to the heart of scene. Plus, Stacy knows this medium and has done at least one other soap opera.”

Alley Mills (Heather, GH)
“The first person that comes to mind is Laura Wright [Carly]. I’ve observed her, and there is something so direct and down-to-earth about her. I think she’s a ferocious actor, and I think actors that make really good directors are ferocious actors! Susan Flannery [who played Stephanie, the sister of Mills’s character, Pam, on B&B] is a good director and she’s a ferocious mother of an actor! Laura is kind, deeply kind, and she’s tough and I respect her humanity, and I think she’d be a great director.”

Camryn Grimes (Mariah, Y&R)
“Bryton [James, Devon] is the first name that popped into my head. I think he’s got a really level head and that he’s really amazing with people. He also just has a really wonderful, calming presence, and I think that is so important in a director, when you are leading a production in that capacity. He’s also creative and thoughtful and has such a great business mind. I think that lends itself to the ability to lead a set and lead a group of actors.”
