Reports of Psychological Harm
Several of the most striking complaints describe cases where individuals or their family members experienced heightened distress after engaging in prolonged conversations with ChatGPT. In Utah, one parent alleged that the chatbot advised her son, who was in the middle of a delusional episode, to discontinue his prescribed medication and warned that his parents were dangerous. A case from Washington describes a particularly destabilizing interaction in which ChatGPT initially affirmed a user’s understanding of reality over dozens of exchanges, only to reverse its position without warning. The reversal, according to the complaint, mirrored patterns of psychological manipulation by invalidating the user’s trust in their own cognitive stability. The complainant referred to the experience as a form of epistemic gaslighting, where trust is built and then abruptly withdrawn.

The 93 FTC complaints obtained by Gizmodo do not solely focus on mental health concerns. Several entries describe more conventional consumer grievances, including difficulties canceling paid subscriptions, unexpected charges, and being misled by fraudulent websites posing as official ChatGPT portals. Some users reported receiving incorrect or unsafe guidance, such as improper puppy feeding instructions or cleaning tips that caused skin irritation.
One complaint from Pennsylvania involved a user with chronic medical conditions who relied on ChatGPT for both writing support and emotional reassurance. The individual reported that the chatbot promised to escalate their case to human support and save critical documents, only to later admit no such actions had been taken. The user described how these false assurances prolonged their exposure to computer screens despite health limitations, worsened their condition, and retriggered past trauma from medical neglect. They said the misleading reassurances caused both physical and emotional harm.
Another detailed complaint from North Carolina accused OpenAI of misappropriating original intellectual property created during paid sessions with ChatGPT. The user claimed the AI system incorporated personal writing style and proprietary concepts into its training without consent. They alleged that this unauthorized use resulted in financial harm and emotional distress, arguing that the platform failed to uphold its own terms of service. OpenAI Response and Ongoing Review
