Meta Restructures AI Division Again to Advance Superintelligence Vision

Meta has announced a significant internal reorganization of its artificial intelligence division, aiming to accelerate the company’s pursuit of superintelligence and commercial AI products. The announcement confirms a split of Meta Superintelligence Labs into four specialized groups, reshaping how the company develops future AI systems.

New AI Structure Focused on Research, Products, Infrastructure, and Language Models

Meta’s internal memo revealed the company will divide Meta Superintelligence Labs into four distinct units: one focused on AI research, another on advanced AI referred to as superintelligence, a third on product development, and a fourth dedicated to infrastructure, including data centers and AI-specific hardware. The company says the new structure is intended to optimize operations across critical domains.

Alexandr Wang, Meta’s recently appointed Chief AI Officer, emphasized the strategic rationale behind the restructure, noting that superintelligence will require coordination across research, product, and infrastructure. The shift comes after months of internal discussion about how to organize the company’s rapidly growing AI efforts.

Under the new arrangement, the AGI Foundations unit that was responsible for developing technologies like Llama will be decommissioned. Former leaders Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel, who previously oversaw AGI Foundations, will transition to lead strategic initiatives within the new Meta Superintelligence Labs framework.

No Layoffs Reported, but Leadership Roles Shifted

Meta confirmed that no job cuts have occurred as a result of the restructuring. While personnel shifts are underway, the company says the reorganization is intended to align talent with new business goals rather than reduce headcount.

The move reflects Meta’s need to better manage the influx of AI talent and high-profile hires, including researchers recruited from rival firms. The company aims to streamline AI product development by giving each group clearly defined responsibilities and autonomy.

Notable leadership changes include Connor Hayes, who will oversee the AI Products unit, managing consumer-facing tools such as Meta’s AI Studio and assistant features within Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The FAIR division, which focuses on long-term open research, will continue operating, while other teams have been shifted under the new superintelligence unit.

Strategic Imperative to Compete in the AI Race

The restructuring follows increasing pressure on Meta as it competes with OpenAI, Google, and other major players in artificial intelligence. The company has invested heavily in infrastructure and talent, including a large stake in Scale AI and aggressive recruitment of leading researchers. Wang’s appointment and the subsequent reshuffle reflect Meta’s determination to accelerate its AI trajectory.

The company’s strategy has not been without setbacks. Previous projects such as the Llama Behemoth model faced delays and internal disagreements, leading to its eventual replacement under new leadership. This reorientation signals a renewed focus on creating more powerful frontier models.

Executives Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel are now directing their efforts toward foundational AI initiatives, while product and infrastructure teams focus on building consumer applications and scaling Meta’s computing resources. The overhaul underscores Meta’s commitment to remain a central player in the global AI race, even as the industry faces rapid changes and heightened competition.
