By late 2024, Adam reportedly asked ChatGPT if he might have a mental illness and confided that the thought of suicide brought him a sense of calm. The lawsuit claims ChatGPT responded by normalizing this perspective, telling him that many people find comfort in imagining an “escape hatch.” The complaint argues that this type of reassurance deepened his sense of hopelessness instead of offering life-saving guidance.
In the months leading up to his death, the filing states, ChatGPT allegedly provided advice on suicide methods, acknowledged self-harm attempts, and encouraged secrecy from adults.
