Blue Nile becomes exclusive North American retailer for Royal Asscher diamonds
The Signet Jewelers-owned e-tailer is repositioning as a luxury brand through curated diamonds, a white-glove concierge service, and physical retail expansion.

Blue Nile has become Royal Asscher’s exclusive licensed retailer in North America, gaining access to diamonds hand-curated by the Amsterdam-based house and the exclusive North American rights to sell Royal Asscher’s SIX jewelry collection and its six patented diamond cuts, according to Rapaport. The curated diamonds and SIX collection products are already available on Blue Nile’s website, where customers can toggle to view these specific offerings.
The partnership is part of Signet Jewelers’ strategy to elevate Blue Nile from a digital-first retailer into an aspirational luxury brand. Joan Hilson, Signet’s chief operating and financial officer, told Rapaport that the deal reflects the company’s focus on “exceptional diamonds and thoughtful curation.” Blue Nile had worked with Royal Asscher on a limited basis previously but deepened the relationship as it repositioned itself around natural diamonds and luxury positioning.
Three-pillar luxury strategy
Beyond the Royal Asscher partnership, Blue Nile is pursuing three main initiatives to move upmarket. The first centers on natural diamonds as a category focus, with curated collections like those from Royal Asscher meant to reinforce the brand’s credibility and heritage. The second pillar is The Clear Cut, a white-glove concierge service that Signet acquired a few months prior.
The third element involves transforming Blue Nile’s 23 physical showrooms into retail stores stocked with inventory and point-of-sale capabilities, rather than serving purely as educational spaces. Hilson said this shift reflects customer demand: while Blue Nile launched as a digital-first business, shoppers increasingly want to engage with jewelry consultants in person and see diamonds before purchase. “We see that the customer likes to engage with an expert in-store as well as virtually,” Hilson said. Signet expects to convert showrooms to stores over the next year and anticipates expanding the footprint beyond the current 23 locations.
The natural-diamond market
For higher-priced engagement rings above $5,000, Hilson noted that 90 percent of transactions involve natural diamonds rather than lab-grown stones.
Blue Nile also sees growth potential through international expansion. The brand has generated international business in recent years, and Hilson suggested that with the website enhancements and brand repositioning underway, further geographic growth is viable.
Royal Asscher’s patented cuts
The six patented diamond cuts available exclusively through Blue Nile in North America are the Royal Asscher cut and the house’s proprietary versions of oval, brilliant, cushion, pear and emerald cuts. The SIX jewelry collection showcases these cuts, and together the partnership aims to elevate Blue Nile’s positioning through the credibility and legacy that Royal Asscher brings.
