Hey Harper, the female-founded waterproof jewelry brand, is marking its eighth anniversary by shutting down all sales for a single day to distribute 8,000 pairs of its signature Dazzling Long Earrings, with a combined retail value of $760,000. The giveaway runs on October 20, according to the brand, with consumers able to claim a pair by paying $5 shipping at heyharper.com.

The move is intended to confront what the brand calls widespread frustration among consumers with jewelry that deteriorates. According to a survey of roughly 1,000 U.S. women that the company cited, 86% experienced a jewelry problem within the past year, around 40% had pieces discolor their skin or turn green, and 68% stopped wearing items after they tarnished or faded. The brand also noted that consumers spend approximately $25 billion annually on jewelry that tarnishes or fails.

Why durability matters

Founded in 2018 by Catarina Oliveira, Hey Harper makes jewelry from marine-grade stainless steel with a coating of 14K gold PVD. According to the brand, this process molecularly bonds the color coating to the metal, making it resistant to tarnishing, fading and water damage through regular wear. This construction differs from traditional gold plating, the brand said.

Oliveira said in a statement: “Turning eight is a big deal, and we wanted to prove that affordable jewelry shouldn’t fall apart. Instead of a sale, we are closing the store for 24 hours and putting 8,000 pairs straight into people’s hands, no purchase required.”

First designer collaboration

The birthday giveaway comes as Hey Harper prepares to launch its first collaboration with a fashion designer. On October 22, the brand will introduce a collection created with Amari Carter, a designer known from Netflix’s Next in Fashion. The collection features butterfly designs and asymmetrical circular motifs, available across rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, according to the brand.

Carter said in a statement: “The inspiration is deeply personal. Partnering with Hey Harper allows me to share a story of transformation through durable, wearable design.”
