Met Gala 2027 celebrates everyday fashion after Galliano retrospective cancellation
The Costume Institute's new exhibition will explore how designers transform jeans, T-shirts and ordinary materials into high fashion.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced the theme for its 2027 exhibition and gala on November 5, pivoting sharply from its original plan. The show, titled “extraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” will explore how fashion designers reimagine commonplace clothing and disposable materials as art.
The announcement follows the August cancellation of a planned retrospective celebrating designer John Galliano. The museum’s decision to abandon the exhibition at a late stage was unprecedented.
Two sections, one vision
Andrew Bolton, the institute’s curator in charge, has structured the exhibition into two parts. “Familiar Forms” will examine how designers reinvent archetypal garments—jeans, T-shirts, biker jackets, trench coats—and reshape the symbolism around them. “Common Matter” will focus on how designers elevate disposable materials including paper, aluminum and plastic.
Bolton emphasized that everyday garments hold deeper meaning than their simple appearance suggests. Clothing we wear regularly can carry traces of our lives—the habits, memories and attachments that transform an ordinary object into something personal. According to Bolton, designers work with that familiarity to reveal unexpected possibilities within forms and materials that viewers may think they already understand.
A collection spanning generations
The exhibition will feature over 200 items, opening with pieces from Jun Takahashi’s fall 2024 Undercover collection, titled “Watching a Working Woman,” which drew inspiration from the 2023 film Perfect Days. The range will extend to works by Matthieu Blazy, Marc Jacobs, Brooke Shields’s Calvin Klein collaboration, Junya Watanabe and Charles James.
Bolton built on the thinking behind last year’s “Costume Art” exhibition, which centered the body in the design process. He was particularly drawn to moments like Takahashi’s work, which layered and joined familiar garments in new ways to complicate traditional ideas of identity and form.
A departure from fantasy
The shift represents a marked change in tone for the gala. Galliano was known for theatrical shows that explored historical excess and grandeur; the new direction instead celebrates the everyday as a source of fashion innovation. According to Grazia USA, the exhibition will invite visitors to consider the personal significance of the clothes they own, from the memories attached to an old T-shirt to the comfort of a favorite pair of jeans.
The theme underscores how much of fashion’s innovation draws from street style and the uniforms that have shaped how society dresses. The industry’s shock at Marc Jacobs’s elevation of grunge in his 1993 Perry Ellis collection, or the fascination with Matthieu Blazy’s optical illusion leather jeans at Bottega Veneta in recent years, illustrates how designers transform the quotidian into the radical.
