Alexander McQueen has announced the departure of Seán McGirr, who held the role of creative director for the past three years. The house will soon name a successor, according to Kering, the luxury group that owns the British fashion house.

McGirr joined Alexander McQueen in 2023 and steered the house through a period of creative realignment. In his statement, he emphasized his focus on “the interplay between raw, visceral, human beauty and the precision and rigor at the heart of the House.” During his tenure, he worked to anchor the brand’s creative output in contemporary culture and connected the house more closely with London’s artistic landscape, drawing connections across art, music, and cinema.

Leadership transition

Gianfranco D’Attis, president and CEO of Alexander McQueen, thanked McGirr for his work, noting that he “approached the House with great respect for its history while expressing his own vision.” D’Attis credited the departing creative director with helping the house “reconnect Alexander McQueen with London, its culture, and its extraordinary creative energy.”

Luca de Meo, CEO of Kering, framed the transition as an opportunity to build forward. “Our ambition is to establish a bold new direction for the House, building on its unique heritage of exceptional tailoring, uncompromising creativity and rebellion to reaffirm its position as one of the most innovative and culturally relevant voices in luxury,” de Meo said in the announcement.

McGirr’s vision

McGirr expressed gratitude for his time at the house, describing the work as collaborative. “I am incredibly proud of the progressive energy we cultivated as a team,” he said, adding that he looked forward to his next chapter. He praised “the dedication of the studio and atelier, and craftspeople” who supported his vision during the three-year period.

Alexander McQueen, founded by Lee Alexander McQueen in London in 1992, operates from a design studio and atelier in the city. The house is part of Kering’s portfolio alongside Saint Laurent, Gucci, Balenciaga, and other luxury brands. According to Kering, the house is defined by tailoring traditions rooted in Savile Row training, with inspiration drawn from nature, British heritage, and contemporary culture.
