Jeremy Renner and his 13-year-old daughter Ava Berlin stepped out together on the red carpet at the 24th Alice nella Città Film Festival in Rome on October 23, marking one of their few public appearances as a pair. Renner was in the city to discuss his memoir, My Next Breath, which details his recovery from a near-fatal snowplow accident, and received recognition from the festival’s youth jury and delivered a masterclass.

Ava wore a teal-blue satin gown with an off-the-shoulder design and a flowing skirt, paired with delicate jewelry and nude strappy heels. Renner appeared in formal navy suiting with a three-piece jacket, white dress shirt and black tie. At the photocall held at the Teatro Sistina, the pair shared a tender moment, with Renner’s arm encircling Ava’s waist.

A trip with deeper significance

The Rome outing followed a private vacation the two took through Italy in the days before the festival appearance. On October 22, Renner shared candid photographs on his Instagram Story showing him and Ava taking in iconic Roman sights: walking toward the Colosseum, posing for a selfie in front of it, and standing together by a fountain with Saint Peter’s Basilica in the background.

The getaway carries particular weight for both. Renner has consistently credited Ava as central to his survival and recovery after an accident on January 1, 2023, at his Nevada home involving a 14,000-pound snowcat. The collision left him with severe injuries—sources report either 38 broken bones and a collapsed lung, or over 30 broken bones along with serious blunt chest trauma. He required multiple surgeries and extended rehabilitation.

Ava’s role in his recovery

During his earliest days of recovery, when Renner was bedridden, his daughter helped care for him. He has spoken about the reversal of their usual roles and how that experience strengthened their relationship. “Reason No. Ava also contributed an essay to his memoir and recorded her contribution for the audiobook edition.

Although Renner generally shields his daughter from public attention, she has accompanied him to significant events. In April 2023, three months after the accident and while still using a cane for support, she appeared alongside him at the Los Angeles premiere of his Disney+ series Rennervations, the two dressed in coordinating navy outfits for what was his first red-carpet outing since the crash.

Life after near-death

Renner has described his experience during the accident in spiritual terms. “What I experienced when I passed was this collective divinity and beautiful, powerful peace. It is the most exhilarating peace you could ever feel,” he shared. His recovery, documented in My Next Breath, has become central to how he speaks publicly about resilience and the role his family, especially Ava, played in his return to health.
