For Olivia Colman’s press tour surrounding the romance film Wicker, hairstylist Clayton Hawkins traded her signature pixie cut for long, salt-and-pepper curls that have become central to her glam. The shift marks a striking departure from the look audiences know, one that required both tools and product to achieve and maintain.

Hawkins, who has worked with Colman throughout the press run, told Allure that styling the actor is “a dream.”

The Technique

Colman, according to Hawkins, has “gorgeous natural curls” that he emphasized for the tour. His process began with preparation: he applied the Amika Frizz Me Not Hydrating Anti-Frizz Treatment, then diffused her hair with a L’Oréal Airlight Pro hair dryer. To create the curls themselves, Hawkins used a 0.5-inch curling iron, wrapping sections randomly throughout to keep them, as he described it, “wild and sexy.” He then added volume at the roots with Sexy Hair’s Powder Play Lite Soft Volumizing & Texturizing Powder, followed by backcombing and teasing with a wide-tooth comb.

Gray Hair Care

“If you take care of gray hair and keep it silvery, there’s nothing better, in my opinion,” he said, according to Allure. He recommends purple shampoo as a standard for gray, white, and blonde hair, and suggests adding sunscreen protection to prevent brassiness. Hawkins often works with Dove and endorses its UV Repair & Glow UV Defense Serum for this purpose.

The Hair Question

When asked how Colman managed to grow from her May pixie cut to shoulder-length curls, Hawkins offered a tongue-in-cheek response: “Medical mystery!” He did not specify whether extensions, a wig, or another method achieved the transformation, leaving the precise mechanics unexplained.

Wicker arrives in theaters on October 23. In the film itself, Colman’s character wears curls at a shorter length, while Skarsgård’s wicker husband sports blonde hair and facial hair styled to resemble a romance-novel cover. Hawkins expressed enthusiasm for the film’s release, calling Colman “hilarious and beautiful and a joy to be around” and describing the project as “sexy” and “bonkers.”
