True Botanicals launches Spirulina Cleansing Powder, a water-activated cleanser

The brand's new powder formula aims to cleanse without stripping the skin barrier, drawing on mineral-rich microalgae from the Canary Islands.

True Botanicals has launched Spirulina Cleansing Powder, a waterless powder cleanser the brand said rethinks how skincare should approach the first step of a routine. Rather than pursuing the “squeaky clean” feeling that can signal a stripped skin barrier, the formula aims to deliver a deep cleanse while preserving hydration and essential moisture.

The powder is built around two forms of Spirulina Maxima, including an ingredient called Algaktiv GenoFix Day, sourced from volcanic waters in the Canary Islands. According to the brand, the microalgae neutralizes free radicals and defends skin against daily stressors. The formula also includes PCA, a humectant that mimics compounds naturally present in skin, and finely milled Colloidal Oatmeal. It remains dry until mixed with water, when it transforms into a lather.

Clinical results

True Botanicals conducted independent clinical and consumer testing on the formula. According to the brand, the powder clinically boosted skin hydration by up to 49 percent immediately after use across all test participants. After four weeks of consistent use, 100 percent of participants reported less oily skin, and all said the product reduced the appearance of dullness over time. Ninety-seven percent said their skin felt clean, refreshed, and balanced right after use. The brand also said clinical testing confirmed the formula supports a healthy skin pH and is gentle enough for daily use.

Hillary Peterson, founder of True Botanicals, said in a statement that the brand saw an opportunity to shift industry thinking about cleansing. “Skincare doesn’t begin after cleansing—it starts with the very first step,” Peterson said, describing the powder as a way to deliver an effective cleanse while keeping the skin barrier intact.
